This approach is certainly saves me a lot of the pain I have in reading many other history texts, but there are times when Chasteen fiee choose better to demonstrate facts instead of divulging in a biographic vignettes. Retrieved from ” https: Chasteen is an engaging writer and makes the history interesting, but in textbook Quick notes: One of our children is involved in the school academic club. It’s decent as the barest bon. A Eurocentric history that shades into one focusing heavily on the role of the United States as the author moves through the time, this book could have benefited greatly from an expanded focus on the indigenous and African peoples of Latin America the mestizos get some representation, though perhaps not enough.
Latin American Voices in For an introductory text concerning such a huge region and time period, it did a remarkable job of pointing out that nothing happened everywhere, and showing just enough information about what was going on in places that didn’t follow the pattern and with everyday people and women that it firmly situated itself as an introductory text, which made me want to learn more.
He chzsteen also the author of Heroes on Horseback: I highly recommend to anyone who wants a succinct history of Latin America and Latin American ideologies. It would have been nice to get a little more insight into some of these leading players, but I understand the difficulty in recapping five hundred years of history chxsteen more than twenty countries in less than pages.
Overall, I do think the positives outweigh the negatives with Born in Blood and Fire, I had a surprisingly good time reading it and I left this book with new knowledge of our complex, rich history. Definitely a good introduction into the development of Latin and Central America.

I was disappointed by that, but did see that inhe published a sister guide focusing on primary sources and ownvoices. This a fine introductory text, and more enjoyable to read than Kiernan’s Viet Nambut it lacks nuance or detail.

Jul 27, Claire added it. That aside, the last chapter of the book which deals with the most recent events–the 90’s is so skimpy! The book provides insights into all the major ideas through colonization to the present.
Chasteen does spectacularly in covering the important narratives of changing periods and his prose manages to keep the material interesting enough. I get the difficulty of writing a synthetic history covering millions of square miles and hundreds of years in a reasonable page count.
